Topshop, Urban Outfitters, Miss Selfridge- All popular brands that deliver a similar service. Great Fashion at High-street prices. But do these big names really quench our thirst to create our own unique style? No. There are no ‘one offs’, limited options and at times items can be overpriced.

This is why charity and vintage shops have become more and more popular. People are striving to have a more ‘individual’ look and what better place to find this look but in Manchester’s very own Afflecks.

Afflecks (formerly Affleck’s Palace)is a building which basically houses an indoor market located in Manchester Northern Quarter. Dozens of independent stalls, small shops and boutiques operate in the one building. The building was once occupied by a department store called Affleck and Brown, hence the name.

Afflecks Palace first opened in 1981. The original ethos for Afflecks was to create a safe environment for entrepreneurs to start out with affordable rent and no long term contracts.

The relaxed atmosphere and colourful maze-like layout led to Affleck’s becoming a mecca for alternative culture. During the 1990s ‘Madchester Summer of Love’ period – when local bands like The Stone Roses and Happy Mondays were at the height of their popularity; Affleck’s Palace was a fashionable spot to purchase all the essentials a band needed to stay cool.

In 2008 Affleck’s Palace ceased trading. It re-opened on 1 April 2008 as Afflecks under new management. Afflecks is managed by property developer Bruntwood.  Many traders feared that closure would be likely but Afflecks remained the iconic alternative shopping haunt the boutique owners wanted.

Afflecks’ wide variety of shops caters to vast amount of people.

For all the finest Biker & Rock-a-billy gear, Switchblade ( is the place to go.

Oh Hell Clothing (  is one of the newest, coolest shops which sell printed tees and other customised pieces.

Soho’s ( has all the best in skater and gothic wear.

Hannah makes things  ( - is a jewellery and hair accessories company which sells everything from ham sandwich earrings to cameo brooches.

Afflecks is a one-off.
